Utica Comets training camp has opened

The Comets have a busy week coming up.

The Utica Comets announced their initial training camp roster on Monday that includes recently signed forward Patrick McGrath. The roster totals eighteen players and is broken down into twelve forwards, four defensemen, and two goaltenders. As the New Jersey Devils pare down their roster, the training camp in Utica will grow in size. On Sunday, New Jersey waived forward Brian Flynn and defenseman Robbie Russo for the purpose of assigning the pair to Utica. They both cleared so expect to see them with the Comets soon. Neil Villapiano of the Devils State of Mind Podcast was on a recent episode of Marty’s Illegal Stick to discuss which high end Devils prospects could see playing time in Utica this season. You can watch that episode here: New Jersey Devils Podcast host discusses the team’s prospects and who could play in Utica.

The Utica Comets will play a pair of exhibition games this week. On Friday October 8th, they will take on the Rochester Americans at the Adirondack Bank Center. The following night the Comets will travel to Syracuse to face the Crunch. The regular season for the team opens on Sunday October 17th at the Adirondack Bank Center when the Rochester Americans come to town. October 17th will also mark the 34th anniversary of the first game in Utica for the Comets AHL predecessor, the Utica Devils.
