Utica Comets announce their opening night roster and other notes

The Comets play their first regular season game Sunday October 17th versus Rochester.

The Adirondack Bank Center will be rocking this Sunday afternoon, as the Utica Comets will open their first regular season as the New Jersey Devils’s AHL affiliate at home against the Rochester Americans. On Thursday, the team announced the twenty-three man roster for that first game. The entire roster can be found here http://www.uticacomets.com.

In preparation for the regular season, the Comets played two preseason games. The first one was a thrilling shootout win at home over the Rochester Americans. The next night in Syracuse, they lost to the Crunch 2-1. Utica narrowly avoided being shutout by scoring with five seconds left tin the game.

This initial roster will of course change throughout the season, as injuries and transactions in both Utica and New Jersey will impact the Comets. For instance, New Jersey currently has all twenty-three of its roster spots occupied, with four players on injured reserve. As the players on injured reserve are ready to return to action, it will necessitate the Devils either release or send a corresponding number of players to Utica to fit them in. In turn, this means the Comets will have make room on their roster to take in whomever is coming from New Jersey.

NHL teams do not typically carry three goaltenders on their rosters, but that is exactly what the New Jersey Devils are doing right now. Their presumed tandem of MacKenzie Blackwood and Jonathan Bernier are both dealing with injury and medical issues, so Scott Wedgewood has remained with the team. It was thought that Wedgewood would begin the season in Utica, but he was outstanding for the Devils during the preseason, so it makes sense to keep him in New Jersey while Blackwood and Bernier get back to full health. Wedgewood could still very well end up with the Comets, just not as soon as expected. If and when it does happen, however, the Comets will need to make a corresponding roster move as well.
