Utica College Head Coach Gary Heenan joins the show to chat about the upcoming Pioneers season.
For the Utica College Pioneers Mens Ice Hockey team, success is not just something they want – it is expected.
It is this attitude that Gary Heenan has instilled in his team that has led to successful campaigns on a regular basis. Among the many accolades that Heenan and the Pioneers have garnered are four straight United Collegiate Hockey Conference regular season titles (the conference has never known another regular season champion), and two outright UCHC titles in 2018 and 2020. It is not surprising the Pioneers are ranked number one in the UCHC preseason coaches poll.
After winning both of their preseason games, Heenan’s Pioneers now look to the 2021-22 regular season. Despite the number one ranking in the coaches poll, they know it won’t be easy and they are a target for the rest of the UCHC. The regular season starts this Saturday and Sunday with Adrian College paying the Pioneers a visit at the Adirondack Bank Center. The last time these two teams met was in January of 2020, where the Pioneers took both games of a two game set in overtime on the Bulldogs home ice in Adrian, Michigan.
In this episode, Coach Heenan talks about the importance of winning both of this weekends games. He also talks about his observations from the preseason games, the veteran leadership on the team, the goaltending, his thoughts on the preseason coaches poll, and much more.
After the interview, the Marty’s crew discusses the Chicago Blackhawks scandal, the proper time to panic after a bad start, and the red hot start of the Utica Comets. The Zamboni Time Machine examines why it is not a good idea to refuse a kid’s request for an autograph.
