After a pair of preseason games, the Utica College Pioneers Mens Ice Hockey team opens its regular season against Adrian College.
The wait is finally over for the Utica College Pioneers Mens Ice Hockey team and their fans.
After going 2-0 in their preseason slate with wins against Oswego and SUNY Cortland, the Pioneers open their regular season with a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday at the Adirondack Bank Center. Their opponent will be the Adrian College Bulldogs, who are making the trip from their home campus in Michigan.
The Pioneers enter this season with lofty expectations, as they are ranked number one in the UCHC preseason coaches poll. Lofty expectations are nothing new to the Pioneers, as they have consistently been a powerhouse in NCAA Division III hockey. In the last USCHO National Poll on March 23, 2020, Utica College was ranked number three in the entire country. In the clip below from a recent episode of Marty’s Illegal Stick, Coach Heenan talks about the preseason coaches poll as well as the upcoming Thanksgiving tournament – which is being hosted by Utica College at the Adirondack Bank Center on November 26th and November 27th.
The Pioneers enter this season with a veteran laden team which is loaded with experience, including three players that are graduate students. With most of their roster from last season returning, the Pioneers should be loaded in all areas of the game. The offense should be led by Jamie Burcell, Dante Zapata, Brian Everson, and offensive defenseman Justin Allen, among others. The Pioneers net will be guarded by Senior Sean Dickson, and he will be backed up by Freshmen Bryan Landsberger and Louis-Felix St. Jean.
