Utica College demolishes Arcadia University

Head Coach Gary Heenan reaches milestone with the Utica College victory.

Welcome to the UCHC Arcadia University.

The UCHC newcomer Knights were given a very harsh introduction to the conference by the Utica College Pioneers on Friday night at the Adirondack Bank Center, losing to the home team by a score of 12-1. This was also the first conference game for the Pioneers, who are ranked number three in the nation according the latest USCHO Division III poll.

With the victory, Utica College Head Coach Gary Heenan earned his 300th career victory. It was also the 300th victory in the history of the Utica College Mens Hockey program, as Heenan is the only coach the program has ever had.

Utica College got on the scoreboard early and often. Regen Cavanagh scored just one minute and fifty-eight seconds in, and the Pioneers were off and running. They pelted Arcadia starting goalie Fletcher Bolda with twenty-one shots in the first period alone, and built a 4-0 lead by the end of the first period. Utica College’s other goals came from Khristian Acosta and two from defenseman Justin Allen. Pioneers goaltender Bryan Landsberger faced only three shots in the period and stopped all three of them.

Utica College Pioneers ranked third in new national poll

The second period started just like the first, with Utica College scoring early. With only just over a minute gone in the period, Josh Kagen beat Bolda to make it 5-0, and the rout was on. Shortly after the Kagen goal, Brandon Osmundson and Eric Holland lit the lamp for the Pioneers, chasing Bolda (mercifully) from the game. The new Knights goalie, Drake Voell, lasted just over three minutes, as he gave up two goals in that time. He would be replaced by Lucas Brine, who finish the game for the Knights. With the score 8-0, Arcadia finally got on the scoreboard on a goal by Carson Asper. In turn the Pioneers responded with goals by Brendan Schultz, John Moncovich, and Regen Cavanagh’s second of the night to make the score 11-1 at the end of the second period.

The goal lamp got a bit of a break as there was only one goal scored in the third period. That goal was John Moncovich’s second of the night with just over a minute left in the game, and the Pioneers took home a 12-1 victory. Freshman Bryan Landsberger stopped ten of eleven shots he faced to earn his first collegiate victory. Utica College was led in scoring by Regen Cavanagh (2 goals, 2 assists), Brandon Osmundson (1 goal, 3 assists), and John Moncovich (2 goals, 2 assists).
