The Utica Comets win tenth game in a row

The Utica Comets win for the tenth straight time to start the season on Sunday afternoon.

The Utica Comets continued their winning ways on Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over the Belleville Senators.

Utica got off to a good start and never looked back on Sunday afternoon at the CAA Arena in Belleville, Ontario. The Comets poured fourteen shots on Belleville goaltender Kevin Mandolese, with one getting by the Belleville net minder. For the second consecutive game, Ryan Schmelzer opened the scoring. This time he fired a loose puck the Mandolese could hold in his glove top shelf to give the Comets a 1-0 lead. The Schmelzer goal would be the only marker of the period.

The second period featured a lot of back and forth play as both teams would get scoring chances. Comets goaltender Akira Schmid made several good saves, and Mandolese did the same – including a save with about five minutes left in the period where he absolutely robbed Nolan Foote with a left pad save. Despite his efforts, the Comets would get another goal with just under seven minutes left in the second period. Defenseman Reilly Walsh scored his first goal of the season when he took a feed from Nate Schnarr in the slot and snapped a wrist shot past Mandolese on the glove side to extend the Utica lead.

Two minutes into the third period, the Comets took a 3-0 lead on a goal by Fabian Zetterlund. He took a pass from Marian Studenic at the Belleville blue line and stickhandled through the Senators defense before beating Mandolese to light the lamp. To their credit, the Senators did not quit after the Zetterlund goal. They would ultimately outshoot the Comets in the third period fourteen to nine, and did manage to break Schmid’s shutout bid with just over three minutes left in the game. With the extra attacker on the ice, Belleville leading scorer Jake Lucchini sent a pass to Pontus Aberg, who put the puck past Schmid from the left side of the Comets crease, making the score 3-1.

Belleville pulled Mandolese for the extra attacker once again after the Aberg goal, but this time it would backfire. After a defensive zone face-off win, Comets defenseman Robbie Russo flipped the puck to the neutral zone to a waiting AJ Greer. Greer did the rest by skating into the Belleville zone and depositing the puck into the empty net for the final goal of the game. With the 4-1 win, the Utica Comets record on the season improves to 10-0-0-0.
