Utica College Pioneers still ranked number two in USCHO poll

The Utica College Pioneers mens ice hockey team in number two for the second straight week in the USCHO national poll.

The USCHO (U.S. College Hockey Online) released its latest Division III men’s college hockey national poll on Monday and the Utica College Pioneers remain ranked as the second-best team in the nation. The Pioneers rose to number two last week after starting the season ranked number three.

The Pioneers played one game since the previous poll came out last Monday. That game was on Friday night when they defeated the Nazareth Golden Flyers at their home rink in Rochester, NY. Like the Utica College Pioneers, Nazareth plays in the UCHC.

Captain Dante Zapata led the Pioneers to the victory over Nazareth by scoring two goals in the game on three shots. Goaltender Sean Dickson earned the win which was his fourth straight victory. According to https://ucpioneers.com, Utica College has the best offense in Division III hockey by averaging 6.57 goals scored per game.

Inside the numbers of the Utica Comets undefeated streak

The top five in the Division III men’s hockey poll is as follows:

  • #1 Geneseo
  • #2 Utica College
  • #3 Adrian
  • #4 Augsburg
  • #5 Hobart

Of the twenty first-place votes available, Geneseo was awarded fifteen of them, with Utica College garnering three and Adrian two. The Pioneers have an overall record of 6-1-0 which includes a 5-0-0 mark in the UCHC.

Up next for coach Gary Heenan’s team is the Thanksgiving tournament they will be hosting at the Adirondack Bank Center on November 26th and 27th. Joining the Pioneers in the tournament will be Amherst College, UMass Boston, and the number one ranked team in the nation Geneseo. Depending on the outcome of this tournament, there could very well be a new number one and/or number two team in the Division III USCHO men’s poll that will come out on Monday, November 29th.
