Huge weekend looms for the Utica College Pioneers

The Utica College Pioneers mens hockey team is hosting a tournament this weekend with major rankings implications.

The number two ranked Utica College Pioneers have a chance to vault to the top of the USCHO national Division III men’s ice hockey poll this weekend.

That is because they are hosting the Utica Thanksgiving Showcase that includes the number one ranked Geneseo Knights, along with the Amherst Mammoths, and UMass Boston Beacons. Amherst and UMass Boston are not ranked in the latest USCHO Division III poll, although UMass Boston did receive four votes.

The first game of the tournament will be on Friday pitting Geneseo against UMass Boston. Geneseo vaulted to the top of the rankings based on a 6-0-1 record, garnering fifteen of twenty possible first-place votes. The Knights play in the SUNYAC in which they have a 4-0-1 record. The only game they have not won this season was a 2-2 tie against Cortland last Friday night.

The UMass Boston Beacons are members of the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC). They have an overall record of 4-3-1 with a conference mark of 3-2-1. Their last game was an 8-4 defeat at the hands of Hobart last Friday night.

The second game on Friday night will feature the hometown Utica College Pioneers taking on Amherst. The Mammoths play in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, as do another central New York team – the Hamilton College Continentals. The season has just begun for Amherst, they have an overall record of 1-1-0 and 0-1-0 conference record.

Utica College enters this game as the number two ranked Division III team behind only the Geneseo Knights. The Pioneers have an overall record of 6-1-0 and a perfect 6-0-0 mark in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference. Their only loss was to the current number three ranked Adrian College Bulldogs, a team they defeated that same weekend splitting the two-game series. The Utica College Pioneers also have the number one ranked offense in all of Division III college hockey.

The losers of Friday night’s games will play in a consolation game on Saturday, while the winners will play in the tournament championship game.
