Unsung Utica Comets Heroes so far: Aarne Talvitie

He might not be the flashiest player, but Aarne Talvitie has played a big role in the Utica Comets success this season.

With the postponement of Tuesday night’s game against the Belleville Senators, the Utica Comets will now not be in action until Monday the 27th in Rochester. This break is a good time to dive deeper into this team’s roster and highlight some potentially overlooked pieces that have helped make this season as successful as it has been. Normally, as we have seen time and time again here in Utica, call-ups and injuries can easily derail a season. However, the great depth of this team has helped avoid that. A key name in that has been Aarne Talvitie.

As with any team, it’s easy for fans and media alike to focus on certain premiere players while simultaneously overlooking some unsung heroes that make the team go. Talvitie is no doubt one of the batteries to this Energizer Bunny here in Utica. The 22-year-old left-handed center from Espoo, Finland has notched 5 goals and 3 assists so far this season for a total of eight points through twenty games played; as with most players I like to highlight, though, there is a lot more than the scorer’s sheet. Talvitie has established himself as a solid two-way player for the Comets and shown why he belongs on a professional roster. After being a highly sought-after recruit for the Penn State Nittany Lions and being the captain of Finland’s 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship’s gold medal-winning team it is easy to see why Talvitie has become a fan favorite here in Utica with the hardcore Comets faithful.

The Utica Comets have a wealth of NHL experience

Talvitie is far from afraid to do the dirty work as we have certainly seen so far this year with his constant ability to dig out loose pucks and finish checks on any sized opponent. As far as offensive production goes I wouldn’t be surprised if we see an uptick in numbers from Aarne going forward. He has a very solid shot but more importantly, his on-ice vision and skating are really what can change the game numbers-wise. At this point through the season, we can expect to see players start to settle into their roles on the team and these attributes can help set his teammates up for some great scoring opportunities.
