Central New York College Hockey Returns This Weekend

The holiday break is over for central New York college hockey teams as Utica College, Hamilton College, Morrisville, and Colgate return to action.

The wait is over for central New York college hockey fans as all four local teams return to the rink for games this weekend. Here’s a look at the weekend slate of games for Utica College, Hamilton College, Morrisville, and Colgate men’s hockey.

The Utica College Pioneers

The Utica College Pioneers play both of their games this weekend at home in the Adirondack Bank Center. On Saturday afternoon, they hit the ice to take on the Curry College Colonels. This will be a big game for the USCHO Division III men’s rankings, as Utica College is ranked third and Curry is ranked fourteenth. Both teams’ records show they are worthy of their rankings – Utica College is 9-2-0 overall with a 6-0-0 conference (UCHC) record, and Curry is 8-2-1 overall with a 6-2-1 conference (CCC) mark.

On Sunday afternoon, the Pioneers stay at home in the Adirondack Bank Center where they were supposed to play local rival the Oswego State Lakers. Oswego has apparently postponed their games, as the Pioneers will now play the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons. Cortland owns an overall record of 8-4-1 and a conference (SUNYAC) record of 5-2-1. The Pioneers will be playing two more tough opponents (Cortland has tied #2 Geneseo and defeated #5 Hobart this season) this weekend, but it should be noted that Utica College’s two losses this season came to the current number one ranked Adrain College Bulldogs and number two ranked Geneseo Knights.

Utica College Pioneers forward John Moncovich joins Marty’s Illegal Stick Hockey Podcast for episode #58. Pioneers defenseman Jaxon Rutkowski is featured in episode #55.

The Hamilton College Pioneers

Just down the road in Clinton, the Hamilton College Continentals will return from break on Friday night at Russell Sage Rink to face the Colby Mules. Originally, the Continentals were supposed to play the Bowdoin Polar Bears, but that game has been postponed. Hamilton has an overall record of 4-2-1 with a conference (NESCAC) record of 3-1-0. Both Colby and Bowdoin are in the New England Small College Athletic Conference with Hamilton College.

The Morrisville Mustangs

The Morrisville Mustangs were supposed to return to action at home on Wednesday, January 5th against Arcadia, but that game was canceled. Instead, Hamilton will go on the road to play the Albertus Magnus Falcons (overall record of 7-5-0) on Tuesday, January 11th, and the Post Eagles on January 12th. The Eagles are actually a Division II team and have an overall record of 5-7-0. Morrisville is currently 4-8-1 overall and 1-7-0 in the SUNYAC.

Atlantic Hockey Association Championship coming to Utica

The Colgate Raiders

Central New York’s only Division I men’s hockey team also returns to action this weekend after more than a month off. The Colgate Raiders will travel to the state of Michigan to take on the Northern Michigan Wildcats. Colgate has an overall record of 8-10-0 and is 3-5-0 in their conference, the ECAC. Northern Michigan has an overall mark of 10-8-1, and their conference (CCHA) record is 6-7-1. The Colgate and Northern Michigan games will take place on Friday, January 7th, and Saturday, January 8th.
