Michigan Wolverines take top spot in new national poll, and local college hockey notes

The new USCHO Division I Mens Ice Hockey Poll has been released and has a new number one.

Going into this season, the Michigan Wolverines were thought by many to have the best roster in all of college hockey. With NHL first round picks such as Luke Hughes, Kent Johnson, Brendan Brisson, and number one overall pick Owen Power on the roster, the Wolverines are considered heavy favorites to win this season’s NCAA National Championship.

After defeating then number one ranked Minnesota State, and number five ranked Minnesota-Duluth, Michigan is the new number one team in the country in the USCHO poll released on October 18th. The Wolverines received forty-five out of a total of fifty first place votes.

Utica College Men’s Ice Hockey wins preseason debut

The ECAC, the NCAA Division I conference which represents six New York State colleges has three teams in the new USCHO poll. Quinnipiac University, which calls Hamden, Connecticut home is ranked number seven, while Harvard (located in Cambridge, Massachusetts) is number fourteen .Cornell University in Ithaca, NY is number fifteen. Three other ECAC teams received votes in the poll as well, but did not make the top twenty. Colgate almost made it by getting 57 votes, while Clarkson got 41. Receiving one vote was the Rochester Institute of Technology to round the ECAC contingent.

The new USCHO Division III poll is not out yet, but local colleges have begun play anyways. Perennial powerhouse Utica College started their preseason by defeating the Oswego Lakers 6-4 last Saturday night. They finish their preseason slate this Saturday against SUNY Cortland and begin their regular season October 30th with a weekend series against Adrian College.

The two other local Division III schools have yet to begin to play. Morrisville will start their season on October 30th when they travel to Lebanon Valley, while the Hamilton College Continentals will have to wait until November 19th to begin play.

Alexander Holtz leads the Utica Comets to a win

On the women’s side, the ECAC is well represented in the USCHO national poll. Colgate is third with an impressive 8-0-0 record, while Quinnipiac is seventh with a record of 6-0-2. At number ten is Cornell, which has yet to play a game.

Although it does not have a men’s ice hockey team, Syracuse University does have a women’s team. They are a Division I program that plays in a conference College Hockey America. Their season has already begun, and they currently have a record of 1-4-2.

Local Division III women’s programs are gearing up to begin their seasons. Morrisville will start on October 29th when they face Lebanon Valley, while Utica College will begin October 30th with a game against Elmira. Hamilton College still has to wait for one month, as they don’t begin until November 20th.
